My 1st Trip To Dodger Stadium - September 28, 2013 - Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

My wife, being the beautiful person that she is, even though she is NOT a Dodger fan, decided that she would finally get me to Dodger Stadium. I've been to a few Major League ballparks in my lifetime and maybe it's just that I love the Dodgers so much but, this was more than I ever expected. I walked in and was overwhelmed by how perfect Blue Heaven is. There was nothing like it. There is a kind of energy that hovers over the crowd at Chavez Ravine. My father-in-law described my being there in a sea of Dodger blue as(warning: star trek nerd reference) "Odo going back to the Great Link." I was back to a home away from home.

BLUE HEAVEN

Me overwhelmed.

a frustrated Matt Kemp

We didn't find out until after this shot was taken that he had been scratched from the lineup.

We would also find out later that it was because of his ankle and would be out of the playoff games entirely. A reason to be upset indeed.

the frightening stare of Zack Greinke

he's staring at me!

No Posts For A Few Days...

I apologize in advance as I will be taking a short trip out of town this weekend. Tomorrow I will be attending the 2nd to last game of the Dodgers regular season in DODGER STADIUM! It will be my first time ever, going to a game at Chavez Ravine. I plan on taking as many pictures as possible and hopefully get some autographs, however unlikely. Monday should be back to normal and I should have plenty of stories to tell and pictures to share before the start of the postseason.

Baseball News From Around The Leagues

Baseball Is Still A Game, Right?

Rivalries are a part of the game of baseball. Yankees and Red Sox, Cubs and White Sox, Phillies and Pirates, and Dodgers and Giants.. These rivalries make the games interesting and fun. Some rivalries have a long and storied history such as the Dodgers and Giants that stems all the way back to Brooklyn and Manhattan in the 1880s and 90s. Since then, that rivalry has continued on.

A rivalry is good for everyone involved, baseball in general, the teams, the fans..as long as it stays within the confines of the ballpark. Some fans don't seem to understand the meaning of a rivalry or what it means to be a fan of a team or even the game itself. Let's not forget too what the term "fan" is short for. Fanatic.

The term 'fanatic' has been thrown around in this world we live in quite often in the last 12-15 years. 'Fanatics' bombed a federal building in Oklahoma. 'Fanatics' shot multiple kids in Columbine, Colorado. 'Fanatics' attacked and destroyed the World Trade Center. And most recently, 'fanatics' stormed a shopping mall in Kenya and killed multiple innocent bystanders.

Who are we? We are people that love the game of baseball. That's it. There really is a difference between the two words, 'fan' and 'fanatic'. We spend countless hours and dollars to go to the games, collect the memorabilia and follow our favorite teams. But let's not forget that it is a game. It's entertainment. Why does it have to go any further than this? We love our teams and support them in any way we can. It should never cross into violence. Unfortunately,  Please, true fans of baseball, you do your team nor humanity any honor if you take your love of the game to that point.

Following last night's Giants/Dodgers game at AT&T Park, a Dodger fan was killed on his way home with his family.

My heart and deepest sympathies go out to the families of Jonathan Denver.

Ryu's Solid Pitching and the Puig/Kemp Combo Win in SF

It should be no surprise that Hyun-Jin Ryu will be in the postseason rotation with performances continuing like last nights. Don Mattingly seems to have strong confidence about Ryu. He said in his postgame interview, "I've always been comfortable with Hyun-Jin. There's no question mark. Most every outing has been pretty much quality. He bends, he doesn't break. You couldn't ask anything more."

Hyun-Jin Ryu(14-7, 2.97 ERA) allowed only 1 hit in 7 innings, striking out 6 batters, including the seemingly hot bat of Hunter Pence. Hyun-Jin Ryu's Great Start

Yasiel Puig homered in the 5th to put the Dodgers up 1-0 after getting hit by a pitch in the 3rd. As Vin Scully announced, 'he answered the way the good ones do, he crushes the ball and hits it out.' Puig's Deep Homer at AT&T

Although Tony Abreu hit a homer in the bottom of the 5th, it would be Matt Kemp who would break up the tie in the top of the 6th. Matt Kemp's Solo Homer To Break The Tie

Brian Wilson came into the 8th for the Dodgers and was met with "mixed reactions". Wilson would strikeout 2, retiring 3 in a row in the 8th.

Brian Wilson's Perfect 8th

Kenley Jansen would come in for the 9th inning and conclude the save with the strikeout of Pablo Sandoval. Kenley Jansen's 28th Save

Personally, I saw a lot of Dodger Blue out there last night. It was beautiful. There are fans of baseball and then there are True Blue Dodger fans and it's a beautiful thing.

Zack Grienke Dominates the Padres in Tuneup Game

The Dodgers were able to shutout the San Diego Padres with their starting pitcher, Zack Greinke. He lowered his ERA to 2.67, retiring 9 batters and allowing only 2 hits.

With a playoff berth already clinched, this has been a perfect opportunity to sharpen our pitching in preparation for October. Greinke showed he's a fighter and has what it takes to dominate in the playoffs.

The Dodgers will be in San Francisco for a 3 game series starting tomorrow. Oh how I wish the clincher could have been completed there! I am happy though that it was completed early enough to give our Boys in Blue some breathing room and some time to get everyone healthy and ready for October.

Meanwhile in Oakland, the A's clinched their spot in the playoffs with their win versus the Minnesota Twins. I will have to say, these boys deserve this. They, not unlike the Dodgers, have dealt with a lot of setbacks and tough losses and have a right to be the champs in the AL West.

The Los Angeles Dodgers Clinch the National League West Title

Everything in this game can be said in one perfect Vin Scully quote..

Dodgers Magic Number Still at 2 After Loss to D-Backs

Did we really think it was going to be that easy? The Dodgers seem to have new struggles day-to-day.

Let's start with Stephen Fife. Fife got the start so that Clayton Kershaw could get a much needed 3 days rest. Unfortunately, he didn't make it beyond the 3rd inning. He allowed 4 earned runs and walked 3. I believe some pitchers have it in their mind that they're a certain type of pitcher(starter, closer, reliever). I think Fife is a good pitcher but not a starter. He's a reliever and he should wear it proudly. Some great relievers have played for the Boys in Blue. Jay Howell, Jim Brewer, Todd Worrell, to name a few.

Yasiel Puig doubles and gets picked off? I'm not going to discuss why that shouldn't happen.

However, another issue, and its an issue out of our control, was the officiating. Adrian Gonzalez was ejected last night for arguing a call that was completely wrong. Michael Young was waived around on Gonzalez's double as the D-Backs made the throw from left-center. From the replay, the first base umpire Jim Joyce, just blew the call. It was obvious that Young had tagged home plate before catcher Miguel Montero, could tag his elbow. Clip of call and Adrian's ejection What do you think? I believe this was, most likely, a decisive factor in the Arizona win.

The game steadily made a left turn and went downhill for the Dodgers. What are you gonna do? This is the September push for playoffs. Things like these are bound to happen. It's not going to be easy for any team going into October. With focus and sometimes restraint, the Dodgers can finish this up and clinch the spot.

Today, Ricky Nolasco(8-2, 2.63 ERA) will make the start in just over an hour from now. Nolasco has worked for us in the clutch before and barring any blown calls, should finish it up for us.

Dodgers Magic Number Down To 2!

Alright, my Boys In Blue!

Both Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez returned to the the lineup last night to help the Dodgers break their 4 game losing streak. Kemp went 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Ramirez got on base 4 times(3 walks) and Juan Uribe and Adrian Gonzalez hit two-run homers at Chase Field. With Zack Grienke on the mound, he only allowed 2 runs in 6 innings and is 15-3 overall with a 2.75 ERA.

Matt Kemp has been out of the starting lineup since July 21st and based on his performance last night, he hasn't missed a beat. Hanley Ramirez has missed the last week of games but as Don Mattingly said last night, "Hanley's timing is ridiculous. He hasn't played in 6 days and he's right on it."

Stephen Fife(4-3, 2.47 ERA) is on the mound tonight which should clinch us the first playoff spot in October. Honestly, the Dodgers haven't looked this good in quite some time. I can't wait for the playoffs!

Dodgers Drop Series Beginner in Arizona

Reminders of a dismal May 2013 seem to play through my mind when watching replays of last nights game in Arizona.

Hyun-Jin Ryu had a stellar start, only allowing 2 hits and retiring 19. The lack of run support though led to the Dodgers dropping this one, 2-1. This seems to be a classic case of them not getting beat as they let this one go.

Yasiel Puig, as everyone knows, needs to control himself. Matt Kemp needs to come back and stay back. Hanley Ramirez and Carl Crawford needs to get back and stay healthy. There's too many factors leading to losses with this team. Adrian Gonzalez said they "need to be patient" and that the wins will come. While I believe this to be true, and I'll use a term i hate, our 'B team' needs to step up like they have been in the last few months. Hustlers like Nick Punto, Skip Schumacher and Scott Van Slyke can motivate this team to perform. Our pitching is as strong as it has ever been. It's our bats that need to come back and stay strong.

Another Delay in the Dodgers Title Push

The magic number is still at 4. However, the Dodgers start their final regular season road trip today, starting in Arizona.

Forget the Giants. Forget the last few games. We didn't really need them anyway. It would have been nice to beat them at home but we can still beat them on their own ground when we meet them in San Francisco next week.

The Dodgers seemed to be limping along and that's not something we need going into the last couple of weeks of the regular season. Rumor is, Matt Kemp will be in the lineup in Arizona. Hopefully, with a morale boost to the team, like he is, we can win some games and keep pushing forward.

Although we took some tough losses over the weekend, the fire of this team is still alive. Edinson Volquez seemed to be adjusting well on the Dodgers mound and our bench seemed to be taking charge and motivating the team well. If we can keep Hanley, Puig and Kemp healthy, we can cruise into the post-season without a hitch.

I can't even be upset..

What can I say about last night's game? Not much really. The Dodgers were on the bad/wrong side of history last night. The Giants became the first opponent to score that many runs at Dodger Stadium ever.

I'll put it this way...I'm a true blue Dodger fan. That means we take the bad with the good. We don't leave a game early. We don't change the channel on the TV. We don't change the station on the radio. We don't make useless excuses. We suffer through loss and celebrate our wins.

We just shake off the aggravations of yesterday and continue on. We can laugh about it when we are done.

Dodgers vs Giants - Game 2 of 4 - 9/13/13

whatever Giants fans...

The only thing I'm upset about regarding this game is the fact that Kershaw took the loss. Otherwise, the game was the Dodgers' to lose. Giants still aren't going to the playoffs and as Hunter Pence said last night in his post-game interview, they know they won't, since they are just trying to "finish strong."

I will say that I am a bit disappointed that the decision was made to pinch hit Crawford for Van Slyke in the 9th. I think that was a bad idea. I also think that Yasiel Puig needs to regain some control at the plate. However, Nick Punto and Andre Ethier showed their hustle on the bases last night, even though Ethier aggravated his left ankle running out a double in the 8th.

The Dodgers would have completely dominated this game, had they been 100%. Hanley Ramirez is out currently with a back issue, Ethier hobbling on a bad ankle, the ever-absent Matt Kemp is out and 2 we didn't expect to see last night, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, both with persisting physical issues. Oh well. Nothing can really stop the Dodgers' playoff push at this stage of the game. It's just nice to see the Giants get beat.

Today brings Ricky Nolasco to the mound to face the Giants' Tim Lincecum. I don't believe that the Giants really know what to do with Lincecum. It's been basically proven that he's not a starter, even though Giants fans will tell you, repeatedly, different. He's a relief pitcher. That is all. He would be a great relief pitcher honestly, but they don't seem to see him that way. Oh well.

Mismanagement and an aging staff has led the Giants to overplay this "momentum" from the last few seasons. Again I say...Oh well.

Stockton Ports' Season Comes To An End

The last game of the Stockton Ports season came to a conclusion today in Modesto. Since I don't really want to talk about today's game, I'm going to share some pictures from yesterday's game which the Ports dominated in.

Talking with Josh Bowman after the game, he said Michael hit 99mph.

Los Angeles Dodgers Make History in Colorado

The Los Angeles Dodgers turned in a sloppy win but had two milestones during their game at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies today.

Clayton Kershaw took the mound today and got the win for the Dodgers but came up with a more awesome stat. In the 3rd inning, Kershaw struck out Wilin Rosario to achieve 200 strikeouts this season. Not only is that an incredible feat but also that he's done it for the last 4 seasons. Sandy Koufax, Don Sutton and Don Drysdale are the only other Dodger pitchers that have gone at least 4 consecutive seasons with over 200 strikeouts per season.

Andre Ethier also made Dodger history today at Coors Field. Ethier is the first Dodger ever with seven or more seasons of 30 or more doubles. He is also the first Dodger with seven consecutive seasons or 30 or more doubles. Andre Ethier's 241 doubles are the most ever for any Dodger in a seven-year span. He also has a career 1,141 hits which puts him in 9th place in Dodger history, right behind Davey Lopes at 1,204.

Newly signed, former Padres pitcher, Edinson Volquez will make his Dodger debut on Wednesday in the final game with the Rockies.
