Bakersfield's Pitching Wins The Day, Ports Fall 4-1

Stockton took an early lead last night with a homer to right field from Bruce Maxwell. However, it would prove to be the only hit and run scored by the Ports in the 4-1 loss to the Bakersfield Blaze.

The Boys of Banner Island have now a slim chance of making it to the playoffs with the San Jose Giants beating the Visalia Rawhide. But, since the Modesto Nuts lost to the Inland Empire 66'ers, that leaves a slight opening for the Ports to squeeze into a spot in the playoffs if they can sweep the Nuts through the weekend.

Tonight is the start of that 4-game series in Modesto with starting pitcher James Simmons(8-7, 5.62ERA) taking the mound. If Simmons can keep his solid streak going, this might give the Ports enough room to get their hitting in order and get some wins.
